Back To School Fashions: It's that time of year again.  I look forward to my daughter going to school after a long summer of a little too much togetherness, but I dread the potential crowds and the definite costs of back to school fashion shopping.

One way I have found to keep costs low is to do a clothes inventory prior to going out for her back to school shopping trip.  I make sure she is not buying her 10th pair of jeans, her 15th pair of socks or her 20th long sleeve top just because she is in the store.  Kids and teens can grow fast over the summer so it is good to get them to try on all the clothes to make sure they all fit before you count them.  Some years getting rid of clothes can feel like pulling your kids teeth since they get really attached, so a promise of getting new clothes if they give up the old may make that process a little easier.  They may try to convince you that stuff still fits if they love an item, so you need to set some strict boundaries of what you consider too tight or too small.  For pants I look at length (do they touch the shoe?) and fit around the butt (is there a set of wrinkles at the crotch?).  Also with low rise pants I make sure the underwear does not show when she bends over.  This also applies to shirt length.  The shirt must be at least an inch or two below the bottom of the pant top so her tummy does not show and break school rules.

Schools often have dress codes so check and see if yours does.  Ours is no short shorts or tank tops. Also no belly bearing.  The code is not enforced but you can use the code to help convince your child that dressing that way is frowned on by many.  You may need this help especially if her friends dress that way and the school does nothing.

Ebay is a great way to get some back to school fashion shopping done online and save some money.  They have a wide variety of styles and sizes, old and new.  Be sure to use a measuring tape on your child and double check all measurements.  Many children will not fit the standard sizes so you may have to do some tailoring or get it done professionally.  Buying back to school fashions online cheaply will help you save money for the tailor.
